During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
